Inspiratie

Deze foto (1987) van Mary Ellen Mark is haar favouriet: "This photograph was made in Los Angeles, in the San Fernando valley, on an assignment for Life. [...] I spent one October week with the Damms, a homeless family in California. [...] I wanted the photograph to move people: I wanted them to see how terrible it is to be homeless.

Ik vind dit zelf een erg mooie foto: het lijkt wel alsof elk lid van het gezin een andere vorm van wanhoop uitdrukt en wat hun bindt is de uitzichtloosheid.

Vanavond was er een documentaire over Kees Tabak op de TV (NPS, Uur van de Wolf). Kees Tabak heeft veel mooie foto's gemaakt, waaronder die van Madonna. Hij heeft ook een portret van Barry Hay en zijn familie gemaakt:



Denk Patricia Steur even weg en wat overblijft is een foto die qua vorm wel erg veel lijkt op die van Mary Ellen Mark. Nog erger is het beeld van een Nederlandse rock-n-roll held die zo graag het amerikaanse leven van een cultuur-rebel wil leiden. Allemaal leuk en aardig maar het klopt niet. Geef mij maar het origineel.

Vandaag eens naar iets geweest waar je niet gauw verzeild raakt: een kattenshow. Op Flickr staan nog meer foto's. Deze half-leeuw komt oorspronkelijk uit Noorwegen. Dit is een serieuze kat.

Zowaar een kogelgat op mijn auto. Lijkt net een aangeschoten verkeersbord op het Amerikaanse platteland. Dit weekeinde heeft de (waarschijnlijk) zelfde dader op een trein geschoten.

Zoals gewoonlijk is het weer mooi weer op het Rotterdamse Zomercarnaval. Al waaide het wel een beetje. Dame op foto houdt hoed vast tegen afwaaien door wind.
Update: deze foto heeft zojuist een prijs gewonnen bij de fotoverkiezing van de NPS.

Welcome to Utah

Omdat het officiele bord langs de snelweg stond, kon ik niet stoppen om zelf een foto te maken. Daarom maar even een kaart van Utah. Wij bewegen ons in de zuid-oost hoek van deze staat waar een aantal nationale parken in serie zijn geschakeld: Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands en Arches National Park.

Utah is gesticht door de Mormonen. Op dit moment is 70% van de bevolking Mormoon.

In September 1823, Joseph Smith was visited by a heavenly messenger named Moroni, in the same way that angels often appeared to Church leaders in the New Testament. Moroni informed Joseph that God had a work for him to do and told him that a record of the ancient inhabitants of the American continent was buried in a nearby hill. He stated that the record contained the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ (Joseph Smith—History 1:27–34). In September 1827, Joseph received the record, which was written on thin plates of gold. Joseph translated the book into English by the inspiration of God and called the book the Book of Mormon. It is named after
Mormon, an ancient prophet who compiled the sacred record. The book verifies, as another testament of Christ, the reality and divinity of Jesus Christ. It is, then, a second witness that affirms the truth of the Bible. Since its publishing in 1830, the Book of Mormon has blessed the lives of millions of people through its powerful message about Jesus Christ and His gospel.
